Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways and is very common throughout the world. It is characterized by different recurring symptoms, with airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm. Symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, and tightness in the chest. The clinical classification of asthma is according to the frequency of symptoms, "forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1), and peak expiratory flow rate". Asthma may also be classified as atopic (called extrinsic) or non-atopic (called intrinsic).

Asthma can be a very debilitating condition depending on its severity. It has the affect of limiting a person's activity levels, and usually reducing energy levels and motivation. Asthma is often also associated with panic attacks due to the shortage of breath. Also other unusual physical and mental sensations become prominent as symptoms progressively worsen, such as tingling and pulsing sensations in extremities.
