There are several different forms of baldness or alopecia.
When you think baldness you're most likely thinking of androgenic alopecia which is "male pattern baldness" – or it's variant "female pattern baldness".

The degree of baldness can vary greatly, there is a strong genetic element to this type of baldness.

Pattern balding is different alopecia areata, which generally involves patchy hair loss. Alopecia totalis is an extreme forms of alopecia areata, which involves the loss of all head hair. Then even worse still is alopecia universalis, which is the total loss of hair from the head as well as the body.
